TFT Set 18 Sprykin Guide: How the BFF Works and the Best Sprykin Comp

TFT Set 18 Sprykin Guide: How the BFF Works and the Best Sprykin Comp

@tft=set18:trait:DA_18_Sprykin@ is the trait with a pet. Turn it on and you get the Big Furry Friend, a summon that fights next to your board. Drop one of your Sprykin champions on it and that champion becomes its Rider.

You don't need many Sprykin to make it work. The strongest Sprykin board runs only three of them and spends the rest of its slots on @tft=set18:trait:DA_18_Executioner@ and 3-star reroll units. This guide covers how the BFF and its Rider work, which Sprykin champions to use, and how to play that reroll comp.

Quick answer. Field 3 Sprykin champions to get the BFF, then drop a Sprykin on it to make it the Rider. The Rider gains Health and Attack Speed. A melee Rider like @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Rammus@ makes the BFF heal him, and a ranged Rider like @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Teemo@ or @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Veigar@ makes it give them more damage. The usual board is a level 7 reroll for 3-star @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Azir@ and @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Rammus@, with @tft=set18:unit:DA_Fiddlesticks18@ as the second tank and @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Teemo@ and @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Veigar@ for the other two Sprykin. @tft=set18:augment:DA_18_SprykinAugment@ turns the trait on by itself and gives you a second BFF.

How does Sprykin work in TFT?

@tft=set18:trait:DA_18_Sprykin@ gives you the Big Furry Friend, or BFF, as soon as you have 3 Sprykin champions. To pick its Rider, drag one of your Sprykin onto it.

The Rider matters for two reasons. It gets the trait's Health and Attack Speed bonus, and it decides how the BFF fights. A melee Rider and a ranged Rider give the BFF different attacks and a different Ability.

Sprykin has breakpoints at 3, 5 and 7:

5

7

At 5, half of the BFF's Ability also applies to your other Sprykin champions, and at 7 all of it does. Patch 18.4 raised the 7 bonus from 45% to 55% Health and Attack Speed.

Most boards stop at 3. You get the BFF and the Rider bonus for three slots, and every slot after that goes to traits that help your carries more. Our Sprykin stats back this up. Boards on 3 Sprykin win more games than boards on 5 or 7, and 5 is the weakest breakpoint. 7 places best of the three, but fewer than 1 in 400 boards ever get there. Reaching 7 takes all six Sprykin champions, including the 5-cost @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_GnarSmall@, plus a @tft=set18:item:DA_18_EmblemSprykin@.

Who should ride the BFF?

The Rider decides what the BFF's Ability does. A melee Rider makes the BFF roar, which heals the Rider for a share of its max Health. At 5 and 7 @tft=set18:trait:DA_18_Sprykin@ the roar heals your other champions too. A ranged Rider makes the BFF dance, which gives the Rider Attack Damage and Ability Power for the rest of combat. At 5 and 7 your other Sprykin get some of that as well.

In the reroll comp below, your three Sprykin are @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Rammus@, @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Teemo@ and @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Veigar@. Each one is the right Rider for a different game:

Your front line falls before your carries finish casting

@tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Teemo@

You're rolling at level 7 and want more mushrooms

@tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Veigar@

Fights ranged and gives him damage

@tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Teemo@ isn't on your board yet

Rammus is your main tank and already holds @tft=set18:item:DA_Crownguard@ and two @tft=set18:item:DA_GargoyleStoneplate@. The Rider's bonus Health and the roar both scale with his max Health, so he holds the taunt longer and your carries get more time to cast.

Teemo holds no items, so everything the BFF gives him is a pure gain. The extra Attack Speed fills his Mana faster, and every cast has a 10% chance to forage a mushroom. More casts mean more rerolls and XP while you roll, which is what a reroll comp wants.

Veigar casts at 30 Mana, the cheapest of the three, so the extra Attack Speed turns into casts fastest. Every kill from his blast also gives him 2% Ability Power for good.

Sprykin champions

Kobuko and Rammus are melee. Teemo, Veigar and Tristana attack from 4 hexes away, so they make the BFF fight as a ranged unit.

Two of them do more than fight. Teemo has a 10% chance on each cast to forage a mushroom you can collect. A red one gives a free reroll, a green one gives 1 Tactician Health, and a yellow one gives 2 XP. His Ability costs 50 Mana and he starts at 0, so on a reroll board he casts often and pays for some of your rolls. Veigar gains 2% Ability Power for good every time his blast kills its target.

The Sprykin Executioner reroll comp

This is the @tft=set18:trait:DA_18_Sprykin@ board you'll see most. It runs 3 Sprykin for the BFF, then rerolls at level 7 for 3-star @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Azir@ and @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Rammus@.

Final board

Seven units give you a lot of small traits. Next to 3 Sprykin, you get 2 @tft=set18:trait:DA_18_Executioner@ from Soraka and Azir, which lets their Ability damage critically strike. Azir and Zyra give 2 @tft=set18:trait:DA_18_Summoner@, Rammus and Fiddlesticks give 2 @tft=set18:trait:DA_18_Defender@, and Soraka and Fiddlesticks give 2 @tft=set18:trait:DA_FloraFatalis18@. Azir and Veigar add 2 @tft=set18:trait:DA_18_Blackthorn@, and Veigar and Fiddlesticks add 2 @tft=set18:trait:DA_18_Spellweaver@.

Leveling plan
  • Level to 4 at 2-1 and to 5 at 2-5, and save gold.

  • Go to level 6 at 3-2.

  • Go to level 7 at 4-1. Roll only the gold you have above 50 until @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Azir@ and @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Rammus@ are 3-star.

Teemo's mushrooms help here. Every red one is a free roll, and every yellow one is 2 XP toward your next level.

Items
  • Azir: @tft=set18:item:DA_GuinsoosRageblade@, @tft=set18:item:DA_HextechGunblade@, @tft=set18:item:DA_RabadonsDeathcap@.

  • Zyra: @tft=set18:item:DA_Morellonomicon@, @tft=set18:item:DA_SpearOfShojin@, @tft=set18:item:DA_VoidStaff@.

  • Rammus: @tft=set18:item:DA_Crownguard@ and two @tft=set18:item:DA_GargoyleStoneplate@. @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_RekSai@ or @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Yorick@ holds them until @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Rammus@ shows up.

  • Fiddlesticks: @tft=set18:item:DA_IonicSpark@, @tft=set18:item:DA_SpiritVisage@, @tft=set18:item:DA_SunfireCape@.

Commit when @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Azir@, @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Rammus@ and @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Zyra@ are showing up in your shops and your items fit them. A Gargoyle Stoneplate in your opener is a good sign, because Rammus wants two of them. If other players are taking the same champions, check the flex boards on our comp page before you spend your gold.

Sprykin Emblem

The @tft=set18:item:DA_18_EmblemSprykin@ is built from a @tft=set18:item:DA_Component_NegatronCloak@ and a @tft=set18:item:DA_Component_Spatula@. The holder gains @tft=set18:trait:DA_18_Sprykin@, and if the holder rides the BFF, it also gets 20% Attack Speed, 15 Armor and 15 Magic Resist.

So the emblem does two jobs. It counts as a Sprykin toward the breakpoints, and it lets a carry that isn't Sprykin ride the BFF. It's also the only way to reach 7 Sprykin, because there are only six Sprykin champions.

Small Furry Friend

@tft=set18:augment:DA_18_SprykinAugment@ gives you a second BFF while @tft=set18:trait:DA_18_Sprykin@ is active. The second one is 45% as strong as the first, up from 35% before patch 18.4.

It also gives you @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Teemo@, @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Veigar@ and @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Kobuko@. All three are Sprykin, so the augment turns the trait on by itself. That's 4 gold of champions, and you can take it early, mid or late game.

Snacktime! Wisp

@tft=set18:wisp:TFT18_Wisp_Snacktime@ costs 2 gold and only shows up while @tft=set18:trait:DA_18_Sprykin@ is active. The BFF eats any enemy it damages below 16% max Health. Upgraded, that goes up to 22%.

On a Sprykin board it's a cheap execute, and it fits a comp that already runs @tft=set18:trait:DA_18_Executioner@. Every Wisp and its cost is on our Set 18 Wisps list.

Common Sprykin mistakes

  • Leaving the BFF without a Rider. The Rider gets the trait's Health and Attack Speed, so a BFF with no Rider wastes the bonus.

  • Going past 3 Sprykin without a reason. The reroll comp stops at 3. Extra @tft=set18:trait:DA_18_Sprykin@ take slots from @tft=set18:trait:DA_18_Executioner@, @tft=set18:trait:DA_18_Summoner@ and @tft=set18:trait:DA_18_Defender@.

  • Forcing 7 Sprykin. You need @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_GnarSmall@ and a @tft=set18:item:DA_18_EmblemSprykin@ on top of the other five, so it only happens in a few games.

  • Selling Teemo too early. His mushrooms are free rolls and XP, and he's one of your three Sprykin.

  • Giving Rammus's items to the wrong holder. @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_RekSai@ or @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Yorick@ holds @tft=set18:item:DA_Crownguard@ and @tft=set18:item:DA_GargoyleStoneplate@ until @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Rammus@ arrives.

How many Sprykin champions are there?

Six: Kobuko, Veigar, Teemo, Rammus, Tristana and Gnar. You need a Sprykin Emblem to reach 7.

What does Small Furry Friend do?
